Somewhere My Love

Somewhere My Love by Lawrence Welk

Somewhere My Love is also know as Lara’s Theme from the movie Dr. Zhivago. I actually have never watched that movie. A long time ago when working on my first website I chose the instrumental version from Lawrence Welk for the page for my parents. It seemed perfect. Perhaps you also remember watching the Lawrence Welk Show at home on television Saturday evenings? Now that my father has recently passed away I wanted to put a formal movie together with the photos of him either on display in frames or in slideshow from his memorial service. This is the second song used for that. And guess what? It just so happened to come to an end as the last picture and music credits displayed. Meant to be I say!

I never knew the words to this song. Now trying to look up the lyrics it seems there were at least two different versions and it was performed by many people. Sadly, I do not know which one my dad preferred or played when playing it on the organ or his accordion. I do know it was one of his favorites. I do remember that my maternal grandmother loved this song and many times requested that my dad play the accordion for her, even while on her death bed. I can so imagine this being my dad’s final words to my mom, his wife and to his girls, my sister and I as he passed late this winter, just over one week prior to the first day of spring and his memorial service was held three days after the first day of spring. He loved music, there was snow, mid-spring there will be hills of dandelions, we will meet again during better days. The long version follows.

Somewhere my love
There will be songs to sing
Although the snow
Covers the hope of spring

Where are the beautiful days?
Where are the sleigh rides to dawn?
Where are the tender moments of splendor?
Where have they gone, where have they gone?

Somewhere a hill
Blossoms in green and gold
And there are dreams
All that your heart can hold

Someday we’ll meet again, my love
Someday whenever the spring breaks through

Warm as the wind, soft as the kiss of snow
Till then my sweet, think of me now and then
God speed my love till you are mine again
Somewhere my love
